Keeping in mind that spelling was not standardized back then, and given 
that this MSN article is being written for a general audience, I think 
"typo" is the best that the article's author is going to do. I think 
medievalists would call them misreadings or transcription errors/changes 
due to the minter's lack of knowledge of Latin. In fact, I think we'd 
read them as showing the minter's lack of knowledge of Latin and being a 
result of a partial/imperfect/mis- understanding of the original.
