OEDO 'basicity', sense 1, 1849.

1842 J.P. Joule *On the Electric Origin of the Heat of Combustion*
_Annals of electricity, magnetism, and chemistry_ (HathiTrust) 8(April)
The basicity of salt of lead never descends beyond this limit, however
great be the excess of white lead.

1842 M.J. Pélouze *On the Combinations of Lead* _The Chemist_
(HathiTrust) 3 The basicity of the salt never descends below this term,
however great may be the excess of ceruse.

The following two quotes from the Gerhardt article are reprinted in _The
Chemical Gazette_ from _Compte Rendus_, 14 Aug 1843:

1843 M. Gerhardt *On the Combinations of Sulphuric Acid with Organic
Substances* _The Chemical gazette, or, Journal of practical chemistry,
in all its applications to pharmacy, arts and manufactures_ (HathiTrust)
1(XXIII) The basicity of the product presents absolutely the same
relations; the oxalovinates, the tartrovinates, the camphovinates, are
monobasic, for they result from the conjugation of a bibasic acid
(oxalic, camphoric or tartaric) with a neutral body, i. e. the capacity
of saturation of which is zero.

1843 M. Gerhardt *On the Combinations of Sulphuric Acid with Organic
Substances* _The Chemical gazette, or, Journal of practical chemistry,
in all its applications to pharmacy, arts and manufactures_ (HathTrust)
1(XXIII) They moreover offer the means of determining the basicity of
organic acids, and that also by combining them with sulphuric acid.

1846 *On Aqua Regia* _American journal of pharmacy and the sciences
supporting public health_ (HathiTrust) 17(January) If, however, an
oxyacid, with compound radical, containing hydrogen, may be produced by
the oxidating action of hyponitric acid, it may, likewise, happen, that
by the action of the same, or of that of nitric acid, on other organic
bodies bases may be formed, acidity and basicity being respectively
dependent on an opposed tendency, resulting from the various manners in
which the molecules are arranged, or the circumstances under which this
grouping takes place, and on those under which these bodies combine, &c.

1847 *Review of the Organic Chemistry of M. Charles Gerhardt* _The
American journal of science and arts_ (HathiTrust) 4(November) The
number of equivalents of oxygen in an acid bears a certain relation to
its basicity.

1847 *Review of the Organic Chemistry of M. Charles Gerhardt* _The
American journal of science and arts_ (HathiTrust) 4(November) The
sulphuric acid is bibasic, and from these facts we deduce the law, that
the basicity; or capacity of saturation in a coupled salt is always less
by one than the sum of the basicities of its components.
