*Subject:* [EXT]A Question About Southern Accents in Arizona
I had a question about accents here in Arizona that I haven't been able to
find an answer for online.
There are many times when I meet a person who has what sounds like a
Southern accent despite them being born here in Arizona. Most of the people
I hear with this accent are rednecks, but not all rednecks I meet sound
like this. (A squares and rectangles relationship, if you will) Living in
both Tucson and Marana, I often hear this accent in the latter area. I also
had a teacher once who was from Show Low but sounded completely Southern.
I'd like to know why these particular people sound the way they do,
especially since it's so different from the common General American. Is
there a pattern or reason to why they sound this way? Something cultural,
historical, socioeconomic, or geographic?
I'd appreciate an answer if you can give one or the email of someone else
who may be able to answer. Thank you.
Regards,
Kaisa Leitner
