Actually, “hawk” has been used for this purpose for centuries; the OED has it, in the sense of noisily clearing the throat, from 1581.  But I haven’t seen “tuah” before.

Some of us have observed that this should probably really be "hock
ptui/ptooie", since both onomatopoeic terms have been in use for spitting
sounds for generations at least, but "hawk" and "tuah" have not.
