Looks like the term -- "the Lyme disease" -- appeared slightly earlier
(18 July 1976) in The New York Times itself
(https://www.nytimes.com/1976/07/18/archives/a-new-type-of-arthritis-found-in-lyme-new-form-of-arthritis-is.html).

Although the article began on p.1, the "the Lyme disease" only appears
later in the piece, cropping up on p. 39 of that Sunday edition.
(Clinicians at Yale who were studying the syndrome seemed to prefer
"Lyme arthritis" at the time.)
