New York, October 8th, 1851.

            Except in the political world, there is nothing worth
chronicling.  Catharine Hayes, as the newspaper critics say. "is carrying
every thing before her."  Her concerts are well attended, and she certainly
has reason to be proud of the reception she has received at the hands of
the American people.  I am informed by her Manager, Mr. Wardwell, that Miss
Hayes will not sing for the "Father Matthew Benefit" until the 20th.
Speaking of the ''Swan of Erin," reminds me of Jenny Lind and Barnum.  It
is said that he realized by the "Nightingale's" concerts over $700,000, —
brickee! aint that "sum punkins" nor nothin'!

This is from a letter to a Rockland County newspaper, meant to inform the
bumkins in Haverstraw about what was happening in New York City.

Jenny Lind -- "the Swedish Nightingale" -- was a soprano brought to the U.
S. by P. T. Barnum, and received with delight, perhaps even rapture, and
with great profit to her and to Barnum.

I don't know anything about Catharine Hayes.
