Many thanks to JL and Bill for gathering valuable citations.
My 2015 message to the ADS mailing list on the saying "A good loser is
no good" included a pointer to Barry Popik's webpage on "Show me a
good loser and I'll show you a loser".

Barry presented a valuable citation dated September 11, 1943 in the
Wisconsin State Journal which credited Rockne with the precursor
statement "Show me a good loser and I will show you a failure".

Bill's citation is a nice improvement because it is dated August 15,
1943 in the Washington Post.

Back in 2019 I created a QI article for "A good loser is no good".
