I remember in the Mets’ first year, 1962, the New York Times, in its
listing of today’s games, referred to them as “Metropolitans.” I think in
game stories, even then they were “Mets.”

The New York Mets have given me much suffering over the decades, but at
least I now can antedate their name:

Met (OED, n.2 1. [modern usage]. Dec. 1960)

1960 _New York Daily News_ 18 Oct. 64/3 (Newspapers.com)

The Met club made this statement yesterday after being informed of its
acceptance.
