[Ads-l] Antedating of "Dude" (Eastern)

[Shapiro, Fred]

I am aware of Jerry's/Barry's/Peter's book, but I don't have a copy of it, and I don't know whether they have an earlier citation of the "Eastern" sense of the word.  Can Jerry or Peter resolve this question for us ?

1883 Sunday Oregonian 15 Apr. 4/1 (Newspapers.com)

The eastern 'dude' is evidently looked upon as being worth preserving as a harmless curiosity.
