[Ads-l] Antedating of "Dude" (Eastern)

I don't even read this example, from the Sunday Oregonian April 15, 1883, page 4, as an example of "'dude' referring to an Easterner coming west."

By its own words, it is describing eastern "dudes" who exist in the east, and a type of person in the West, whose characteristics approximate the "eastern" dude, and "may be developed by evolution into the likeness of the eastern individual."

se 2, "dude" referring to an Easterner coming west.  Does your monograph ha=
ve any citations for that sense earlier than what I posted ?

Fred, Stephen,
The first attestation of dude is Jan. 14, 1883
in the poem by Robert Sale Hill, published
in the NYC newspaper The World, p. 9..
Its discovery by Barry Popik was of major
importance in the study of this word.

Three earlier attestations have been set forth
(first one: 1877), but none of them pan out.
I repeat: None of them are valid.  This is discussed
in some detail in the Origin Of The Term Dude.

Numerous attestations followed the Jan. 14, 1883
publication of the poem.
