Some time around 1980 I was in Brentano's book store in New York, just
browsing. I don't know what made me pick up the novel in question, but as I
opened it up my eyes fell on the dumbest simile I've ever encountered. It's
burned into my memory (OK, a word or two may be off: it's been 45 years):
"Our bodies slammed together again and again like the hands of God
summoning the cosmic head waiter."
Sadly, I remember neither the book's title nor the name of its uniquely
talented author.
Is this literature's worst simile?
