I recall hearing thisl near-truism some thirty years ago. From
Newspapers.com:

1972 _Northern Echo_ (Darlington, Durham, Eng.) (Oct. 20) 12]: Anyway, it
just goes to prove what I've always said: Beauty is in the eye of the beer
holder.

1988 _Tennessean_ (Nashville) (May 20) B1: Beauty's in the eye of the beer
holder.

Etc., etc.
