"With 1978’s “Ambient 1: Music for Airports,” he [Brian Eno] invented ambient music—or at least coined the name."

Though it may be that Eno early on self-identified as intentionally producing such music, I suppose the collocation, like "ambient sound" and "ambient noise" may be earlier.

A brief search turned up a possible precursor in a July 19.1967 patent application, page 1598, right column, GB, here:
