MW has the standard sense: "to interrogate  (someone, such as a pilot)
usually upon return (as from a mission) in order to obtain useful
information."

Here it's "to supply useful information to, upon return from a mission."

2009 Caroline Alexander _The War That Killed  Achilles_ (N.Y.: Viking) 104:
Odysseus, in debriefing Agamemnon and his anxious comrades, makes no
mention at all of Achilles' final position.

Alexander is also recent translator of the Iliad.
