The comic in question was Cul de Sac, created by the late Richard Thompson, and the “cart herds” were the unseen older brothers of Dill, a friend of the central character Alice Otterloop. Since Alice and Dill were about four years old, I am inclined to take their linguistic evidence with a grain of salt.
