In a neighboring house lived a black hell-cat named Margaret, a slave belonging to Mr. Marrero — well known to the neighbors, the police, and to negroes throughout the city, as "Hoo-doo Mag," the queen or high-priestess of the mystic order of the Voudous — a sect whose rites are orgies of rank superstition and obscenity such as none but Satan himself could ever have devised.
