Some years ago I posted about an antedating (1803) of the term "Uncle Sam," an antedating that definitively disproves the Troy, New York legend about Samuel Wilson.   Barry Popik, who has long been the leader in the effort to publicize the true facts about "Uncle Sam," is currently attempting to interest the media about this issue.

Here is a link to excellent information from the Swann auction gallery about the 1803 citation.  Swann was the source of the 1803 discovery.
