I've been hearing and reading this from various politicians for several
days.

1977 _Douglas County Post-Gazette_ (Blair, Neb.) (Aug. 11) 3: Short-term
pain for long-term gain is one way this [local] budget has been described.

1980 _Boston Herald_ (Feb. 21) 10: Clark...asked Canadians to put up with
"short-term pain for long-term gain."

Etc..

Catchy, yes?
