Seattle buyers and University of Washington students agreed on importance of tailored jackets, also cardigans, including a boxy type called "Sloppy Joe".

The ribbon-bound cardigan most highly though of here is called "Sloppy Joe" because
it is a quite long loose one, without buttons at the very bottom so that it gapes
open here in the way so many college girls wear their cardigans.
N.B. An article two days after the bracketed cite above makes it clear that the beer jacket is named for the famous Havana bar "Sloppy Joe's". I think that ultimately, then, the cardigan's name likewise comes from that institution.
