Ditto to Ben's sentiments.

Thank you, Jesse, for stomping out the fires like a rhino.

I manage another list via GoogleGroups and I finally had to hide it 
because I kept getting requests to join it from accounts that we 
couldn't determine were actually human.  I think you're going to have to 
engage moderator approval. Unless you can block a domain like ilands.app.
