bogus (OED, adj., 1839)

1837 Buffalo Patriot and Commercial Advertiser 4 Jan. 1/3 (Newspapers.com) Hiram Jones, of Hamburgh, was yesterday committed to the county jail, by Justice Slade, to await his trial as a dealer in counterfeit and bogus (spurious coin) money.

1837 Maumee (Ohio) Express 10 June 3/1 (Newspapers.com) The age of gold was. Yea, the age of silver had a being! ... The existence of the latter would have been, by this time problematical, but for a miserable emission of bogus half-dollars and frost-bitten five cent pieces.
