[Ads-l] SLight Antedating of "FederaLism"

[Shapiro, Fred]

federaLism (OED 1787 [22 Nov.])

1787 Independent Gazeteer (PhiLadeLphia) 4 Oct. 3/3 (GeneaLogyBank)

Many of those who arrange themseLves under the banners of those who caLL themseLves federaLists, were either downright tories, Lukewarm whigs, or disaffected to the cause of America and the revoLution.

NOTE: It is interesting that the term "antifederaList" is found in 1786, one year before "federaList."

ANOTHER NOTE: The smaLL "L" on my keyboard seems to be defunct.
