MetroLex: The Nuts and Bolts of Lexicography in the Digital Age
Fri, April 28, 2017
4:00 PM – 6:00 PM EDT
Columbia University
Hamilton Hall, Room 702
New York, NY 10027
The Dictionary Society of North America has partnered with local
organizations in the New York City area to establish a series of
meetups called MetroLex. MetroLex meetups bring together
lexicographers, linguists, technologists, educators, and other
language professionals to share research and projects relating to
dictionary technology, dictionary use, language documentation,
semantic ontologies, and lexicography.
Once again MetroLex will be held at Columbia University, hosted by
associate professor of English and comparative literature John H.
McWhorter. The theme of this session will be "The Nuts and Bolts of
Lexicography in the Digital Age." Making brief presentations on the
theme will be three speakers, all of whom are former Random House
colleagues who got their start working on print dictionaries and have
embraced the digital transformation of lexicography.
The event is free and open to the public — you don't have to be a
lexicographer to attend! If you've ever wondered how words get into
dictionaries and how they get defined, the presentations will provide
valuable insights.
Wendalyn Nichols, publishing manager at Cambridge University Press
"Digital from the Start: ELT Lexicography 30 Years on from the Corpus
Revolution"
The rise of the use of massive databases of English – known as corpora
– transformed dictionaries for learners of English, and it still
informs ELT lexicography today. Wendalyn Nichols, trained as a
lexicographer by Michael Rundell and Penny Stock, joined Longman just
two months after their seminal article “The Corpus Revolution” was
published (English Today vol. 8, no. 3, 1992). The former Editorial
Director of Dictionaries for Random House, Wendalyn now leads the
dictionary publishing of the English Language Teaching division of
Cambridge University Press, overseeing the world’s most popular free
online dictionary that focuses on English for learners. In just 20
minutes she will attempt to describe the key differences between
learner dictionaries and ones for native speakers, describe the
transformation from print to digital, and share how the online
Cambridge Dictionary continues to reinvent what it means to be a
dictionary for learners.
Carol Braham and Charles Levine, consultants at Dictionary.com
(formerly with Random House Dictionaries)
"Inside the Lexicography at Dictionary.com"
An insider's overview of the strategies, methods, and goals of the
lexicography at Dictionary.com. Examples of new words and meanings
added recently, and of the ongoing adaptation of dictionary content
for digital use. Presented by Carol Braham, former senior
lexicographer, and Charles Levine, former publisher, respectively, of
Random House Dictionaries. (The Dictionary.com Unabridged is based on
The Random House Dictionary of the English Language, Second Edition,
Unabridged.)
The presentations will be followed by discussion and light
refreshments provided by American Heritage Dictionaries/HMH.
