Dear folks,

I was so happy to find a mailing from the new mailing list today!
(I'm doing the digest so I get it a little later than if I was
getting individual mailings.)

I was thinking that it might be a good idea to introduce ourselves -
most of us know each other but not all.  So I'll start - I'm at
University of Wisconsin-Madison, working on a dictionary of
Menominee.  We have NSF funding (that's National Science Foundation,
not "not sufficient funds," for you Canadians!  ;-) for a 3-year
project.  We're starting off by trying to put together a children's
dictionary, and will build up to as much as we can get done in 3
years, the beginnings of a full dictionary anyway.

We have been using Shoebox for interlinearization of texts but are in
the process of developing our own program for the dictionary.
Unicode was a big factor in this decision, but we didn't know about
Toolbox (at least I didn't).  I'll let the more computer-savvy people
on our project send in something about what we're going to be using.

Part of why I wanted to start this list was to share info about what
programs people were using.  Another thing is just to discuss the
many little questions and decisions that have to be made - what
abbreviations are people using, for example?  Also, if anyone wants
to discuss grant applications, I think that'd be a good topic too.
And anything else that anybody thinks of!

Remember that there's an archive at the LinguistList site, so if you
want to go back & find an old message, it'll be there.
