I am sure there is a lot we do not know about certain practices, and a lot that has been lost. However, I would be very surprised if any such use were to be made of tobacco provided the reverence given to this sacred plant - at least in the Plains area from which my scant knowledge derives.

Sincerely,

Subject: [Algonquiana] TR : article dans le NY Times

One of my colleagues in Quebec sent me a question today for which I have no answer. If you know about this practice, could you let me know?

<< Question : connais-tu une ceremonie chamanique ou de sorcellerie qui impliquerait de jeter un sort a quelqu'un en utilisant du tabac qu'on piquerait dans la terre ou qu'on jetterait par terre? >>

(Question: do you know a shamanic or sorcery ceremony which involves casting a curse on someone by using tobacco that one would jab into the ground or that one would throw on the ground?)

Thank you,

Michael McCafferty
