The Passamaquoddy-Maliseet Language Portal is also an excellent resource, at https://pmportal.org<https://pmportal.org/>
The dictionary now has approximately 19,000 entries.

We are of course all waiting for David Pentland’s Proto-Algonquian dictionary and have offered to make it available online in the Algonquian dictionaries infrastructure. In the meantime, there is this one.
To answer the question about cognates, there are 12-13 language sources. We changed Montagnais to Innu with John’s permission. Here is the list:
Dialect/Language/Source of cognate
Abenaki
Cree
Delaware
Fox
Menominee
Miami
Micmac
Innu
Narragansett
Ojibwe
Penobscot
Shawnee
Watson-Faries
Also, for your information, all characters are now unicode, so if you cut and paste some entries, it should stay consistent. I was not sure about keeping the upper right dot for vowel length, but as you can see in the Help section, we have created a way to search for long vowels by typing double vowels, hats or macrons.
Right now, there is no advanced option for searching in individual languages, but is that something that people would find useful? I had decided against it, but this could be changed. Please let me know.
Thanks for your interest and feedback!

That's why I was hoping someone else had done it or was planning on doing it!
I'll point people to Goddard and Costa for more comparative reconstruction in the blog post though.
Thanks,
Gretchen

Hi, Gretchen,
This is Hewson's book from 1983. It's frozen in this form. I believe there are some minor reconstruction problems in it, and perhaps at some point someone will chime in.
Certainly cognates other than the ones Hewson lists exist. However, tracking them down can be tedious. Articles by Ives Goddard and David J. Costa are good places to look for other reconstructed PA forms and cognates.
Best regards,
Michael

Looks fantastic! Very straightforward, fast, and easy to use, and it's wonderful to see the paper dictionary readily available online. I'll make a blog post about it so it reaches people beyond this list.
From browsing around a bit, it seems like most (all?) of the cognates are from Cree, Menominee, Fox, and Ojibwe. Are there plans to add other modern Algonquian languages, or is that beyond the scope of this project? I don't remember which cognates Hewson listed so I'm not sure how big a task that would be.

The consonant cluster written *çk in Hewson, as in *meçkwikwana and *meçkwitempe˙wa, has been changed to *rk (Ives Goddard, personal communication, January 2, 2004).

John Hewson’s Proto-Algonquian dictionary is now available online at: https://protoalgonquian.atlas-ling.ca<https://protoalgonquian.atlas-ling.ca/>
This dictionary was initially published as a book in 1993. Typos and other minor errors in the database were corrected between 2015 and 2017 with the author to prepare this online version.
Do not hesitate to send feedback on problems if any (with info on browser, OS, used, etc.)
Enjoy!
