Thanks, Marie-Pierre! Luckily it's just for an undergraduate term paper so we don't have to be quite that thorough. It sure is a complicated subject, though!

Hi there,

I happen to be married to a bioethicist and he told me it is a very interesting question of research ethics. However, the response should not be to start by digging in the literature as you are likely to get lost! The best thing to do is to contact your university research ethics services (IRB; REB in Canada) and get an ethics consult to help your student analyse all the issues that are raised by this situation and thus decide how best to proceed (analyse the value of the material for the different stakeholders, determine the rights and responsibilities of each, responsible conduct of research, etc.).

Regards,

Marie-Pierre.

Objet : [Algonquiana] "dangerous texts"

Hello (and apologies for cross-posting),

I have a student who's become interested in the question of the ethics of working with texts that communities believe are sacred or even dangerous (especially if heard or read by the wrong person). We read an article by Pamela Innes (reference below) that talked about this, and I wondered if anyone knew of anything else on the topic. I've done a bit of searching around but this is one where it's hard to find the right search terms!

Thanks for any leads!

Monica
