Hi all,
We continued our discussion from last year when we were in Boulder just last week. Chris Hammerly has given me permission to quote a summary he sent me and some other people:
from Chris:
A quick summary of what I understood the group to have decided:
1. Add guidelines for (some sort of) "community engagement statement" or perhaps something more broadly related to data sourcing as part of abstract and proceedings submissions. There will be different bins for this depending on the nature of the work, but even work relying on historical sources should have a statement about how those data were obtained, to the extent possible.
2. Add guidelines for a positionality statements in the proceedings call. I think that this should also apply to the actual presentations in the conference, if not the abstracts as well. One question that arises quickly as a question is anonymity, since these statements by their nature can reveal the identity of the authors. So these will be something that come in separately from anonymous paper/abstract submissions for review. So that does give us some time for the next round, since I don't think these will need to be in place by January when papers are due.
He also said he wants:
To crowd-source the collection of as many of these types of statements as possible from other groups that have made similar guidelines, then use these as inspiration to make a draft that will be discussed at that meeting we all talked about in ~6 months.
To that end, he created a form to collect such statements: https://forms.gle/PbX5g52M7An297dt7. I uploaded the SSILA statement that pertains to this, for example. And here's a link to a folder where you can see what's been uploaded: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1AUY7SD_GwcbzJfvPiYcYK9iVbMUUr3ZLPGGJMeZ7RFjDcIHIIp08b99vCd9myUthov572b4M?usp=share_link (I hope that works for others; it worked for me.)
And then finally Chris wrote:
There are lots of other things to think about and things we could do, but these guidelines will be significant steps and lay solid ground for more community engagement in the long run I think. Happy to hear anyone's thoughts and ideas!
Yours,
Monica (and Chris and various other people)
