I am forwarding the sad news below that Dr. McCarty has sent me about the fires in Maui.

Dear Jon and Joe and Louise,

Greetings, and we hope this finds you well. We're reaching out to you, as SILS 2023 coordinators, in the wake of the devastating fires burning on Maui. We have learned from friends and colleagues on Maui and Hawai'i Island, including presenters at SILS/AIITEC 2023, that many Hawaiian immersion families and teachers have lost their homes, and Pūnana Leo o Lahaina is gone. Schools on Maui remain closed, and responders are doing 48-72 hour shifts. Kiani Yasak, who presented in our SILS/AIITEC session, said that immersion families are coming together to donate and help clothe, feed, shelter, and treat injuries. But the losses and the need are enormous, and will continue to grow.

Dr. Kauanoe Kamanā, director of Nāwahī Laboratory School, sent the link to the 'Aha Pūnana Leo o Lahaina website (below). She said they would very much appreciate any donation that can be made. We wonder if you could share this information with the SILS Advisory Board and others in your circle who would like to help in some way during this terrible tragedy?
