Dear friends,
At this year's Algonquian Conference, the PAC (Papers of the Algonquian
Conference) editorial team plans to hold a discussion of alternative
publishing and funding models (more details below). We are looking for
volunteers to join us in planning this discussion, in order to open things
up to new possibilities that we might not otherwise think of. If you are
interested and can commit a small bit of time to doing this before October,
please reply to this address (algonquianpapers at gmail.com) by *August 11t**h*
(the reason for the deadline is just so that we have time to get organized).
The background here is that a few years back MSUP (Michigan State
University Press, our current publisher) underwent some funding changes;
specifically, MSU stopped subsidizing the Press, and they now have to break
even on our volumes (they do not, however, have to make a profit). We have
tried to fold this cost into the registration for the conference, but that
is becoming untenable. At this point they need about $3,000 (US) from us,
and that's too much for conference organizers to raise.
There's lots more that could be added, but to keep this message brief, we
will save it for the eventual planning committee.
And please forward this message to anyone you think might not be on this
email list.
Yours,
PAC Editorial Team
(Inge Genee, Monica Macaulay, Margaret Noodin, Marie-Pierre Bousquet, Wes
Leonard, Natalie Weber)
