ALT News No. 8
August 1995

Contents: 1. Report on membership
          2. Program of ALT1
          3. The business meeting at ALT1
          4. Kartvel workshop

1.
Report on membership

At this moment ALT has 107 'real' members, and another 158
near-members. Members are 'real' (i) if they have paid their
membership fee or (ii) if they have explicitly requested a
waiver and received it. 'Near-members' are linguists that have
indicated a desire to become a member or have at least shown
some interest, but so far failed to pay their dues or ask to
be exempt from paying. For the benefit of the latter, a
membership form is enclosed once more.

It turns out that the cost of cashing some checks in
dollars is nearly equivalent to the membership fee. If you
prefer to pay in dollars, use personal checks only, i.e.
checks that come from accounts held in your name - or that of
a friend. Other checks, going under different names in
different parts of the world, incur costs on our side. The
beneficiary of the check should be Johan van der Auwera,
not ALT.

Fully unproblematic, we assume, for both you and us, are
international postal money orders - aren't post offices
universal? - bank transfers, Eurochecks, if you have them,
and if you come to Vitoria-Gasteiz, pesetas.

2.

3.
The Business Meeting at ALT-1

The proposals formulated at the Business meeting (about the
Charter, Offices and officers, Policies, ...) will be
subsequently voted upon by (e-)mail by the entire 'real'
membership.

Preliminary agenda

i. Charter
In preparation of this point members are asked to send
comments on the present version of the Charter to Frans
Plank. He will lead the discussion, the result of which should
be a final text. Contact Frans Plank for copies of the original
version.

ii. Members
iii. Finances
Report by Johan van der Auwera. Discussion.

iv. Structure of the association, Offices and officers

The present acting officers suggest that ALT ought to try to
do with as few offices as possible. The minimum could be the
following:

- President (to serve for 3 years)
- Secretary-Treasurer (to serve for 5 years, and if re-
  elected longer)
- Executive Committee (4 or 5 members, plus President,
Secretary-Treasurer, and Editor-in-Chief as ex officio
members; to serve for 5 years, with staggered
  replacements)
- Editorial board (6 or 7 members, including Editor-in-
Chief; to serve for 5 years, with staggered replacements)
- Editor(s) of ALT News

The Executive Committee, expanded with the local
organizer(s), also serves as a Program Committee.

In addition, ALT should estabish ad hoc committees
whenever there is a need for them (e.g., for projects such as
the The Good Grammar Guide).

At the business meeting the acting officers will propose a
slate of officers. We welcome nominations and suggestions.

v. Journal
Report by Frans Plank. Discussion.

vi. Future ALT meetings and activities

viii. Any other business
