1. Membership
In late January or early February 1997 all members in good
standing, who have obtained that standing this year or last year
through an attempt at paying the admission fee, will receive
Volume 1, Number 1 of the ALT journal, LINGUISTIC TYPOLOGY,
together with a bill. The bill is for the journal-inclusive
membership for 1997. The membership fee has been set at DM 98 ($
60) for regular members, and at DM 57 ($ 35) for student members.

The statutes, in a version that passed the Executive Committee
and that will be presented to the membership at ALT II, also
provide for group members and associate members. Here are the
relevant articles:
4. Any group of individuals, incorporated or not, may apply
for group membership to the Secretary-Treasurer; on
acceptance, such a group shall pay dues at the rate for
a regular member. The individuals constituting a
group member shall be associate members.
6. Only regular members, student members, and group
members may vote and hold office in the Association; to
be eligible to vote and hold office, group members
must appoint one of their constituent associate members
as the representative of the group for the purpose
of voting and holding office. All regular, student,
and group members shall receive certain publications of
the Association, including the journal _Linguistic
Typology_. Anyone may submit articles and reviews to
the Editor to be considered as possible contributions to
the journal. Only regular, student, and associate members
may offer to the Program Committee papers for
oral presentation at the meetings of the Association.
The stipulation for groups and associates is designed for two
types of typologists: (i) those that are married/living together
and are prepared to share one copy of the journal, (ii) those
that for currency reasons are not able to become individual
regular members.
==============
VERY IMPORTANT
==============
The following people should contact Peter Kahrel (Dept of
Linguistics and Modern English Language, Lancaster University,
Bailrigg, Lancaster LA1 4YT, UK, fax: +44-1524-64975,
p.kahrel at lancaster.ac.uk) as soon as possible:
- anyone who does not want to remain in good standing, which
would imply not receiving the journal and paying the new
membership fee for 1997
- anyone who wants to become a member in good standing and who
is not in lists (1), (2), (3) or (4) yet
- anyone who finds him/herself misclassified, misalphabetized or
unjustifiedly present or absent in lists (1), (2),(3) or (4)
- any group that wants to avail itself of group membership status
- any student who wants to retain student status, by submitting
a xerox of a recent student card or a letter signed by an
academic supervisor
2. Journal
It is important that our journal finds its way not only to your
private bookshelves, but also to your university libraries.
Therefore, do recommend LINGUISTIC TYPOLOGY to your university
librarians, perhaps pointing out how inexpensive it is, in
comparison to ... If you need promotional leaflets for this
purpose, as already widely distributed, further copies are
available from Mouton de Gruyter (Postfach 30 34 21, D-10728
Berlin, Germany; http://www.deGruyter.de) or from
frans.plank at uni-konstanz.de.
3. Reminders
3.1. ALT II - Call for Papers
The second meeting of the Association for Linguistic Typology
(ALT II) will be held at the University of Oregon, Eugene, from
September 11 to September 14, 1997. (The dates are the same as
those that had been informally discussed earlier. The venue,
which is different from that of some earlier discussions, is in
order to take advantage of the External Possessor Conference to
be held in Eugene immediately preceding ALT II; see item 3.2
below.) The local organizer for ALT II will be Scott DeLancey,
Department of Linguistics, University of Oregon, Eugene, OR
97403-1290, USA, delancey at darkwing.uoregon.edu.
Members wishing to present a paper at ALT II are asked to send
SIX copies of a one-page abstract to the chair of the program
committee, Prof. Masayoshi Shibatani (address below), to reach
him no later than March 1, 1997. A second page (six copies) may
be attached to the abstract listing data. The program committee
will, by May 1, 1997, convey its decision on acceptance of papers
to those submitting abstracts.
Each abstract should include the author's name (or authors'
names) and mailing address (please, just one mailing address for
multiple authors), including telephone, fax, and e-mail address
as available. Each abstract should specify the amount of time
requested for the presentation, including discussion, which may
be 30, 45, or 60 minutes. Members may also submit abstracts for
symposia, including the names of participants and the amount of
time requested (which may, of course, exceed 60 minutes).
Address for mailing abstracts:
Masayoshi Shibatani
Faculty of Letters, Kobe University
1-1, Rokkodai-cho, Nada-ku
Kobe 657, Japan
Further details of the meeting will appear in subsequent issues
of ALT News. We look forward to seeing you all in Eugene next
September.
3.2. Other
The previous item was taken from News 13 (September 1996), which
also contained information on
-- the ALT Regional Workshop, MALAY/INDONESIAN LINGUISTICS,
Penang, Malaysia, 14 January 1997
-- the SEMINAR ON LINGUISTIC TYPOLOGY, Granada, 10-15 March 1997
-- the EXTERNAL POSSESSOR CONFERENCE, Eugene, Oregon, 7-10
September 1997
You can get copies of News 13 from Johan van der Auwera. You can
also read it at http://www.ling.lancs.ac.uk/alt.
David Gil (dgil at strauss.udel.edu) reports that the
Malay/Indonesian Linguistis Workshop will indeed take place on
14 January 1997 but, due to greater than expected response, also
on the morning of 15 January. David can send anyone interested
a program.
A new piece of information on a perhaps similar subject is that
the Chicago Linguistic Society meeting in the middle of April
will have a parasession on "Universal Grammar, Typology, and
Parameters".
And Lunella Mereu (mereu at unirom3.it) is organizing the "European
Colloquium on the Boundaries between Morphology and Syntax"
(Rome, 23-23 October 1997) and can send anyone the program.
4. ALT Advantages
Perhaps you remember from News 13 that as an ALT member you are
entitled to substantial reductions on volumes in the Mouton
Grammar Library; order from Johan van der Auwera.
In 1997 and 1998 Mouton de Gruyter are publishing nine volumes
resulting from the European Science Foundation's Programme in
Language Typology (EUROTYP). Again, membership in ALT gets you
substantial reductions-- for example, DM 110 as opposed to DM 318
regular list price for volume 1, on Constituent Order in the
Languages of Europe.
5. The Endangered Language Fund, Inc.
This is a new, non-profit U.S. corporation dedicated to:

language's viability
* Dissemination of the results of those efforts both to the
native communities and the scholarly world
The Board of Directors consists of:
Douglas H. WHALEN (Haskins Laboratories; President)
Stephen R. ANDERSON (Yale U.)
Rebecca BENDING (Yakima/Nez Perce)
C. J. CHERRYH (author and classicist)
Noam CHOMSKY (MIT)
Melissa FAWCETT (Historian of the Mohegan Tribe)
Durbin FEELING (Tribal Linguist, Cherokee Nation)
Dennis HOLT (Southern Connecticut SU; Secretary/Treasurer)
Peter LADEFOGED (UCLA)
Floyd LOUNSBURY (Yale U.)
Johanna NICHOLS (UC,Berkeley)
Languages have died off throughout history, but never have we
faced the massive extinction that is threatening the world right
now. As language professionals, we are faced with a stark
reality: Much of what we study will not be available to future
generations. The cultural heritage of many peoples is crumbling
while we look on. Are we willing to shoulder the blame for
having stood by a done nothing? The tide is too large to turn
back completely, but the Endangered Language Fund is designed to
do what we can.
The Fund will support communities that are trying to teach
dying languages to a new generation. Many languages have skipped
a generation, and extraordinary methods are needed for the
language to have any hope. Other languages would be helped
immensely by even traditional aids such as grammars and
dictionaries. Modern language teaching, including interactive
programs, video instruction, and practice tapes can also be of
service. Even languages that cannot be revived can be recorded
to the extent possible, preserving language in a way not
available to previous generations. These and other projects will
be supported through the awarding of grants to individuals and
language communities. A detailed Request for Proposals will
appear this winter. The number of awards that we can make will
be directly dependent on the amount of money we raise.
There are four levels of support:
Member: $50
Supporting Member: $100
Sustaining Member: $500 and up
Friend of the Fund: Any amount
Members will receive a newsletter. Supporting members also
receive a discount on one language book (we are negotiating with
several publishers on this). Sustaining members will also
receive a copy of the language artifact (text, video, tape, etc.)
of their choice from the year's efforts.
***FOR THE FIRST YEAR ONLY, the organizers will induct all
Sustaining Members into the FOUNDERS' CLUB. Inclusion in this
club will provide a permanent record of devotion to the cause of
endangered languages. Members will receive a plaque
acknowledging their crucial support in this effort.
The Endangered Language Fund has applied for U. S. Federal
tax-exempt status. While we cannot guarantee that we will
receive it, we are quite sure that we will. Any donation made
before the award will be retroactively eligible for deduction
from U.S. Federal income taxes once the exemption is granted.
ONE THING THAT WILL HELP US RECEIVE THIS STATUS IS AN
ENTHUSIASTIC RESPONSE FROM THE LINGUISTICS COMMUNITY. PLEASE BE
A PART OF THAT RESPONSE. JOIN THE ENDANGERED LANGUAGE FUND TODAY!
Checks, in U.S. funds, can be made out to The Endangered Language
Fund. Mastercard and Visa are also accepted; include card type,
card number, expiration date, and signature.
