--- BODY OF PETITION:----
Indonesia is one of New Zealand's economic partners and a
significant neighbour. New Zealand needs to support Indonesia in any way it
can to alleviate the conflict in Indonesia so it can move forward towards
democracy. In 2001, the University of Auckland cancelled the teaching of
first year Indonesian Language papers due to low enrolment numbers. We
oppose the cancellation of the Indonesian Language papers at the University
of Auckland as we feel that language promotes social and cultural
understanding and helps in relations between the two nations.
The University of Auckland is the only tertiary institution in New
Zealand offering Indonesian language courses. With the cancellation of these
papers there will be no university in New Zealand offering such papers. It
is unacceptable that the teaching of first year Indonesian language papers
should be stopped in this country.
----
Please support our petition to re-instate the teaching of these
papers. We need your help. This petition will be sent to the Vice Chancellor
of the University of Auckland, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the
Associate Minister of Education. If you are interested in signing this
petition, please click on the link below,
