2 research positions
Linguistic variation in Eastern Indonesia and East Timor
(PhD and/or postdoc)


The Research School of Asian, African and Amerindian Studies (CNWS) of
Leiden University seeks candidates for two linguistic research positions
(PhD candidate and/or postdoc) in the 'Vernieuwingsimpuls' project
"Linguistic variation in Eastern Indonesia and East Timor", funded by
NWO and the University of Leiden.

This research project focuses on the documentation of four endangered
languages of East Timor, two of which belong to the Austronesian family,
while the other two are allegedly 'Papuan'. The descriptive data are
placed in the larger context of language contact, areal patterns, and
genetic and typological variation of languages in Eastern Indonesia.

Ph D position

As a PhD candidate, you will be expected to carry out an in-depth
grammatical study of one East Timor language, and publish a grammar of
this language as a doctoral thesis. This thesis will be defended at the
Leiden Faculty of Arts, and a Full Professor from the Faculty is the
promotor ('primary supervisor') of the project. The PhD student will
carry  out her/his research project within the research school CNWS and
will take part in a training programme for PhD students.

Requirements: (a-b: essential, c-d: desirable)
(a) MA linguistics, or a comparable degree that qualifies for graduate
research. This degree should have been obtained no longer than five
years ago.
(b) Ability to carry out fieldwork independently in East Timor.
(c) Experience in language description and/or language typology.
(d) Affinity with the region of East Timor and/or (Eastern) Indonesia.

Appointment: Fixed term contract for 4 years. The position is available
from 1 September 2002. Salary: EUR 1445 gross p/m in the first year, to EUR
2063 gross p/m in the fourth year.

comparable degree), a copy of your MA thesis, and a sample of written
work on a relevant topic.

In case the candidate has not (yet) formally acquired his or her
Master's diploma, s/he should provide the committee with (i) a list of
validated results in the undergraduate programme so far, (ii) a written
assessment of the undergraduate thesis and (iii) a time schedule for the
period leading to graduation.


Postdoc position

As a Postdoc, you are expected to carry out and publish descriptive
surveys of two or more East Timor languages, co-operate with the head of
the project in the cross-linguistic comparison of the data, and publish
on theoretical implications of the findings. The Postdoc will carry out
her/his research project within the research school CNWS.

Requirements: (a-c: essential, d-g: desirable)
(a) PhD in linguistics
(b) Ability to carry out fieldwork independently in East Timor
(c) Experience in descriptive grammar writing, preferably of a language
in the region
(d) Field experience in Asia (preferably Indonesia or East Timor)
(e) Working knowledge of Portuguese, Tetun and/or Indonesian
(f) Knowledge of recent theoretical issues on language contact, change,
and/or typology
(g) Good publications record

Appointment: Fixed term contract for 3 years. The position is available
from 1 September 2002. Salary: Scale 10, to be determined  (EUR 2056 - EUR
3260 gross p/m)
