Word has reached list maintenance of the death of Donn Bayard in Otago late
last year.

Author of the first examination of "The Cultural Relationships of the
Polynesian Outliers" (University of Hawai'i, Department of Linguistics, MA
Thesis, 1966), and subsequently involved in Southeast Asian linguistics, he
recently (1996) published a very useful discussion that included a
consideration of how archaeologists often understand a reasonable range of
lingustic processes (but sometimes consider them all equally common
(Indo-Pacific Prehistory Association Bulletin 15:71-85 (Chaing Main Papers,
Volume 2))).
