ABVD - Austronesian Basic Vocabulary Database

This is a remarkably ambitious project, headed by Robert Blust, to collect basic 200+ wordlists (a la Swadesh) for as many Austronesian languages as possible.

It is very much in a formative stage, having been in existence for just over a year, but already lists nearly 500 basic An wordlists, searchable for just one word, one language, or various other categories.

As a regular user of it, I can't recommend it highly enough. It's wonderful stuff.

I would ask any of you, if you can help (or correct, or expand, the on-line wordlists already available) to give of your time, and do so. I see some prominent names in this group have already done just that.

Send your helping, correcting, expanding or other information to: Simon Greenhill, at:
  s.greenhill at auckland.ac.nz

But I have to warn you that the poor fellow already has a lot on his plate, and may take a bit of time to acknowledge your contribution.

It would help him if you use the basic database input data instructions at:
  http://language.psy.auckland.ac.nz/austronesian/webedit.php
  and
  http://language.psy.auckland.ac.nz/austronesian/webedit.php?do=create

and, if you have another wholly new language list, use:
  http://language.psy.auckland.ac.nz/austronesian/files/template.xls

Having done my huckster's spiel for this very, very important project, I'm personally a little disappointed that the ABVD wordlists don't include such Austronesian-important words as:
coconut, taro, banana, sago, rice, boat, canoe, outrigger, sail, octopus, crab, shell, bead, pottery, etc.

Please contact me: - Anybody who can help me with those particular words

  regards

My website at www.coconutstudio.com is about the island and its people, coastal early humans, fishing, coconuts, bananas and whatever took my fancy at the time.
