At the 20th International Conference on Historical Linguistics in July, 2011, Harold Koch and Robert Mailhammer called a meeting of linguists doing work in the Asia-Pacific area to discuss research priorities in the languages of the area. I was asked to discuss priorities for the western Austronesian languages and spoke mostly of the needs in the Philippines, the area with which I am most familiar. Harold and Robert are planning on submitting an article based on these reports to Diachronica within the next few months and has asked the meeting participants to send them an updated paper as soon as possible. In order for my coverage to be as complete as possible, I would appreciate input from linguists working in the western Austronesian area letting me know what you think are the areas that could be categorized as urgent research priorities. Please send your response directly to me at reid at hawaii.edu.
Thanks!
