calques in Philippine languages

Hi Piers,
What comes to mind right now is that I suspect "buong araw" (whole
day) and "buong gabi" (whole night) are calques. The non-calque
versions are "maghapon" and "magdamag." I've heard the calque versions
from heritage Tagalog learners at my university so I assumed at first
was an L2 error, but I started hearing it from L1 Tagalog speakers.
I agree with you about the greetings. I remember greeting a Tausug
informant with "Marayaw Adlaw" (Good Day) and she wasn't happy that I
used that because she said it wasn't "correct" Tausug and those
Tausugs who are using it are copying Tagalog.
Anyway, interesting question I'll think of some more and pass them on
to you. I think there are a lot.
