origin of payung=umbrella

Hello AN-langers,
Quick question: the word *payung* turns up in Indonesian, Visayan,
Hiligaynon, Tagalog and probably other languages with the meaning
'umbrella'.

Can anyone suggest an etymology for it?

In addition to *payung* ('umbrella'), Wolff's dictionary of Visayan
includes *payung sa bulan* ('ring around the moon'), *payung sa libgus/uhung
* ('pileus of mushrooms') and *payungpayung sa santus* ('artificial halo
around the statues of saints'). So I get the impression that it has
something to do with ring shapes or cap shapes.
