Sad to hear. Andy was my teacher at the University of Auckland and turned me on to lexicography via his Wayan dictionary project. I was privileged to be his co-editor for Ann Chowing’s English-Lakalai dictionary. On a personal basis we always enjoyed his gregarious company. RIP

Many of you will already have heard that our friend and colleague Andy Pawley passed away peacefully in Canberra yesterday morning.
His absence will leave a large gap in many lives. He was a good friend, outstandingly generous with both his intellectual and his materlal goods, and, of course, a brilliant and gifted student of the languages and peoples of the Pacific and Papua New Guinea.
Sadly Andy had battled with Parkinson’s disease for a number of years. He will be hugely missed. He was 84.
