LECTURER: ARABIC STUDIES
UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN
The University is establishing an Arabic Studies Programme within the
Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures. The
University will also be developing an interdisciplinary centre for Eastern
and Islamic Studies in terms of the bequest of the late Hajee Sullaiman
Shahmahomed and in association with the existing Centre for Contemporary
Islam. An introductory course in literary Arabic will be launched, if
possible, from February 2000.
We invite applications for this first appointment from suitably qualified
persons who have experience in teaching Arabic as a foreign language, a
higher degree in Arabic Studies and with established research interests.
As the successful candidate, you will be able to teach classical Arabic
and will preferably be a first-language speaker of Arabic. Initially, your
teaching duties will be concentrated on the introductory Arabic course.
However, you should be able to lecture in English in one or more of the
related fields of literary, cultural, historical and political studies.
The remuneration package is negotiable and includes highly competitive
benefits.
