The University of Virginia-Yarmouk University Summer Arabic Program
UVA in Jordan
Summer 2003
The University of Virginia-Yarmouk University Summer Arabic Program has
been in operation since 1984. It is an intensive, eight-week Program in
Modern Standard Arabic, designed for undergraduate and graduate
students currently pursuing a university degree. The Program focuses on
all language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. In
addition to Modern Standard Arabic, all students will take a course in
the Jordanian dialect. All courses will be taught in Arabic.
Instructors will be members of the Yarmouk University faculty. Three
levels of skill-based instruction will be provided.
*Intensive summer study of the Arabic Language at Yarmouk University,
Irbid, Jordan.
*Immersion in Arab Culture, and first-hand experience of the Middle
East through travel in the region.
*Three levels of language instruction equivalent to Second, Third, and
Fourth year Arabic at the University of Virginia.
*A new "Islamics Arabic" level has been created and will focus on
studying the language of Islamic literature in classical and modern
texts.
*Academic credit is transferable to your home institution from Yarmouk
University.
*Cost is $3,435. For the Islamics Arabic level, cost is $3,665. This
includes:
1. International airfare (JFK-Amman-JFK).
2. Accommodations in Yarmouk University dorms.
3. Tuition and Fees.
4. Entry fees to archeological sites and two educational trips within
Jordan.
**These fees do not include food and incidentals.
*Students applying for the third and fourth year classes are eligible
for a Fulbright-Hayes grant.

*Application Deadline: April 4, 2003
*Pre-departure Orientation and group travel: June 17, 2003
*End of Program and return to New York: August 16, 2003
