Subject:American University of Sharjah job
The Department of Arab and International Studies of the American
University of Sharjah announces a position, rank open, in Arabic
philosophy of religion, literature and culture. The candidate should
have a native-like mastery of Arabic, a Ph.D., and a distinguished
teaching and research record. The potential candidate is expected to
teach courses in classical and modern literature, Arab heritage and in
an interdisciplinary course on al-Andalus. Along with the native or semi
native fluency in Arabic, the candidate must be able to teach in
English.
Applicants for all positions should have a terminal degree in the
appropriate field and show a commitment to excellence in teaching. As
appropriate, faculty will be expected to employ methods that utilize new
instructional technologies. Experience with project based instruction
and/or interdisciplinary instruction is welcomed. Faculty must be
committed to the vision of this institution as an independent university
thoroughly grounded in Arab culture while serving the diverse population
of the region. While AUS emphasizes undergraduate teaching, retention
and promotion require that faculty publish/produce peer reviewed
research and/or other forms of creative work appropriate for their
discipline.
Initial contracts are normally for a period of two years and are
renewable. Rank will be determined by previous employment history.
Faculty at AUS receive competitive pay and an attractive benefits
package that includes transportation at the beginning and at the end of
the contract, free on-campus housing and utilities, home leave round
trip tickets for faculty and their resident dependents between academic
years, generous educational allowances for up to two children from grade
one through four years of higher education, medical insurance and a
dental plan, yearly indemnity pay and other benefits. There is no
income tax in the United Arab Emirates.
Interested applicants should send their complete CV, addresses
(including email address) for a minimum of three references, and a
letter of application addressed to Robert Cook, Dean, College of Arts
and Sciences to: cashr at ausharjah.edu. All applications will be
acknowledged. Short-lists will be prepared by departmental committees
by the end of December and interviews will be held in various sites in
January and February. Positions are open until filled but preference
will be given to applications received before December 15, 2002.
Preference will also be given to applicants who have some North American
experience. Faculty who are appointed must be in Sharjah by August 22,
2003.
