Dear list members,

I wonder if any of you can trace the history of the two female-exclusive
terms [3aanis] 'spinster' and ['aanisa] 'Miss'. When were they first
used?
The fact that they form a minimal pair may indicate their concurrent and
latter day derivation -old vs. young unmarried woman. Do you know of any
occurrences of these terms in pre-Islamic or early Islamic writings?
