Program in South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies
University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign
The Program in South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (PSAMES) seeks
an Associate Director who can take an active, creative role in
planning and implementing our expanding activities as the newest US/
ED Title VI Undergraduate Area Studies National Resource Center at
the University of Illinois (funding was received for Middle Eastern
Studies). Continuing to feature on-campus and visiting speakers,
colloquia, conferences, and jointly planned activities with other
campus units and organizations, we will also focus on K-12
educational outreach, working with other Area Studies Centers to
provide curricula and teacher training as well as workshops for
business and professional groups.
The Associate Director will assume primary responsibility for
outreach activities, reporting to the Director and working with other
Area Center Associate Directors. S/he will be responsible for
implementing outreach; spearheading development of web-based learning
materials; and editing a newsletter. The Director expects the
Associate Director to play an active role in envisioning, planning,
and implementing program activities; assist with grant writing and
evaluation; provide administrative support for the Director and, in
the Director’s absence, assume responsibility for administrative
operations.
Applicants must have at least an MA in a social science or humanities
field, preferably in Middle East, South Asian or Islamic studies.
Applicants must have excellent English writing and speaking skills,
strong organizational ability, a creative and interdisciplinary
orientation, and excellent computer skills. Experience working with
teachers and diverse community groups is strongly desirable.
Knowledge of a Middle Eastern or South Asian language is considered
an asset. **
This is a full-time academic professional position (non-tenure
system), salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Starting date is as soon as possible after the search closes.
