Hello,

Of the various etymologies -- ranging from the fanciful (because of  
Venice's alleged role as a centre in the nut trade) to the folk  
(Venice's role as a centre for gun manufacturing) -- it would seem  
that the most plausible is still that the Arabic 'bunduqiyya'   
ultimately goes back to the (Byzantine) Greek 'Venetikos'.
