The same word is used in Tunisian Arabic: sbitar-sbitarat, masculine.  
does anyone know anything about its origins? It sounds very much like  
the italian verb for waiting "aspettare".

What should be noted, more importantly, is that Maltese belongs to the
Western (Maghrebi) Arabic dialects, and thus uses common vocabulary,
including borrowings. The universal word for hospital in Morocco and
Tunisia, for example, is "sbitar".

As far as I know, it might be more accurate to classify the maltese  
"lispitar"
as a loanword from the italian "l'ospedale" rather than from English ---
Another thing being that the Tunisian word "sbitar" is also a loanword  
from
Italian meaning Hospital and Maltese is almost a sister language to  
Tunisian
Arabic
