DIRECTOR & Host Institution
Center for Arabic Study Abroad (CASA)
Deadline: November 5, 2008
The Center for Arabic Study Abroad (CASA) seeks applications
for a new host institution and a new Director (a regular full-time
faculty member at that institution) to assume partial responsibility
during the 2009-2010 academic year and full responsibility in June
2010. The CASA Stateside office is currently located at the
University of Texas at Austin and operates two overseas programs at
the American University in Cairo, Egypt and the University of
Damascus, Syria. A detailed description of CASA and its various

The prospective host institution must be an institutional member of
the CASA Consortium and must commit to providing CASA with the
following for a minimum of five years:
• Office and file storage space for a CASA full time program
coordinator. CASA will pay for the coordinator’s position but the
space needs to be provided by the host institution free of charge.
• Support from administrative staff (also free of any charge) within
the academic department/unit that will be hosting CASA.
• Support (free of any direct or indirect costs) through the
institution’s accounting office and office of sponsored programs to
administer four different accounts including two US Department of
Education grants.
Requirements for the CASA Director include:
• PhD in Arabic or related field
• Experience in proficiency and content-based teaching, especially at
the advanced levels
• Experience in curriculum & material development and testing
• Study Abroad Experience
• Professional-level competence in Arabic
Based on CASA By Laws, the CASA Director receives a summer salary
supplement equivalent to 25% of her/his annual salary.
Interested institutions need to submit the following
application materials by November 5, 2008.
• A letter of application, complete CV, and two letters of
recommendation for the Director’s position.
• A letter of commitment from the Department chair or Dean of the
prospective host institution indicating the institution’s willingness
to host CASA for a minimum of five years.
