Summer Program for 2010
The Occidental College Foreign Language Project with the support of STARTALK offers two unique programs. You can apply for a scholarship to attend one or both sessions of Putting the Arabic Standards Front and Center, Summer 2010.
Putting the Arabic Standards Front and Center

1) Building Leadership in Arabic Language Teaching Communities (This is an Invitational Workshop)

Participants in this Invitational Leadership Session create a curricular map for a course they teach and develop standards-based, technology-enhanced instructional units. For the unit they a) specify stage and age appropriate standards-based outcomes tailored to the needs of heritage and non-native learners; b) deliver instruction in the target language embedded in authentic cultural content and contexts that connect to relevant areas of interdisciplinary academic study; c) effectively utilize input, guided practice, extension and assessment structures; d) select, effectively utilize, adapt and create instructional materials to meet the specific needs of their students; e) incorporate educational technology as appropriate; and f) develop strategies for working with teachers new to standards-based instruction
Date: June 13 – June 19, 2010
Place: Hilton Suites, Orange, CA


2) Technology as the Core of Standards-Based Arabic Instruction  

Participants in this Session: a) identify stage and age appropriate outcomes tailored to the needs of heritage and nonnative learners; b) establish objectives for knowledge (cultural/content), for communication and for control of form; c) create technology-based interpretive tasks using authentic materials to make content comprehensible to students; d) create technology-based interpersonal activities that simulate real-world tasks; e) create technology-based presentational tasks that demonstrate culturally-appropriate language use; f) create an online community that facilitates the sharing of materials and practices and fosters continued interaction among the participants in our program.
