SCHOLARSHIPS ANNOUNCED FOR STUDY IN EGYPT
April 26, 2010, (New York, NY) –The American University in Cairo (AUC) has announced two scholarships available to U.S. students wishing to study abroad at AUC with concentrations in studies to advance understanding between the U.S. and the Arab world, or Egyptology.

The American University in Cairo (AUC) was founded 90 years ago and is major contributor to the social, political and cultural life of the Arab Region. An independent, nonprofit, apolitical, non-sectarian and equal opportunity institution, AUC is fully accredited in Egypt and the United States. It is a vital bridge between East and West, linking Egypt and the region to the world through scholarly research, partnerships with academic and research institutions, and study abroad programs.

The Hermann F. Eilts International Scholarship was named in tribute to Eilts, a former U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia and Egypt, and an AUC trustee. Through diplomacy and education, Eilts worked tirelessly to bridge political divides and increase cultural understanding between the United States and the Arab world. Scholarship awards may be applied to tuition, fees and on-campus housing. The scholarship is open to full-time undergraduate students currently enrolled in colleges and universities in the United States, who are already accepted to AUC’s study abroad program. Additionally, they must have a 3.5 cumulative GPA and will be required to register for at least one political science, Middle East studies or history course during each semester of attendance at AUC. To apply, students are asked to write a 1500 word essay on the following topic: “How will my experience at The American University in Cairo impact my future career plans and broaden my appreciation of Arab culture?”

The Simpson Scholarship in Egyptology is a $2500.00 award for one semester to be used toward tuition or living expenses. The scholarship is designed for students who wish to increase their knowledge and familiarity with ancient Egypt. Students must enroll in at least three Egyptology courses. To apply, please send a 1500 word essay on the topic, “Why I want to study Egyptology at AUC” and include a reference to three Egyptology courses for which you wish to register.

Essays for both scholarships must be received in AUC’s New York office by May 15, 2010. Applicants can e-mail essays to Wesley Clark at wclark at aucnyo.edu or mail them to The American University in Cairo, 420 Fifth Avenue, Third Floor, New York, New York, 10018-2729.
